[texts]ERIC ED269314: The Changing Image of World Affairs and the Role of Citizen: Local Communities and Global Education. - ERIC
Two assumptions of efforts to use the community in global studies are: (1) Local communities are significant points of origin and points of impact for much of what we mean by world affairs, and (2) the linkage between the community and world affairs creates for local people a legitimate citizenship interest and role with respect to world affairs. These assumptions hold whether we see the community primarily as an audience, as a support system, or as a curriculum resource for education on world a...

[texts]ERIC ED345321: The Mathematical Modeling of Chaotic Social Structures. - ERIC
Chaos theory describes the way systems change over time. It proposes that systems governed by physical laws can undergo transitions to a highly irregular form of behavior and that although chaotic behavior appears random, it is governed by strict mathematical conditions. This paper applies chaos theory to administrative and organizational issues. Three goals are addressed. First, the use of chaos theory to model social dynamics is justified...

Anthropologists have documented the importance of rites of passage rituals for marking the successful passage from one position in the social structure to another. [texts]ERIC ED321397: On the Meaning of Restructuring. - ERIC
The application of a social theory perspective to an analysis of the concept of restructuring is the purpose of this report. Restructuring is a conjunctive concept that involves changes in a school district's pattern of rules, roles, relationships, and results. A systemic viewpoint examines the reciprocal interactions between structure and process that influence program effectiveness. Examples are presented to illustrate how different goals require different patterns of rules, roles, and relatio...

This paper suggests that community psychology may be going through an identity crisis because of its lack of empirical demonstrations of community intervention effectiveness, and an ecologically valid intervention research base. In particular, this paper suggests that by returning to the point of production, the "mutilated rationality" (Habermas) of constructing markets and the consumer takes on a wider meaning. An awareness of the work of people like Taylor, Casson, and Sloan will illustrate how scientific ma...
